Syllabus

Belt structure:

Grading:

There are 2 belt structures here at Welsh Combat, one for the adults and one for the juniors. The reason being is that adults are capable of understanding and progressing quicker than  children and can develop their sparring, techniques and fitness much earlier. However, students can double grade (jump a belt) if we feel a grading has been exceptional.

White belt: Is the very first belt at WCK.

Orange belt: Basic hands - basic legs - knowledge of guard and blocks - satisfactory stance - reasonable level of fitness.
Yellow belt: Fluent with basic hand routine - satisfactory guard and blocks - a good level stance - show resonable flexibility - show increased fitness - point sparring - one round of point sparring.

Yellow - White Tag belt: Fluent basic hands & legs with speed & snap - back fist - upper cut - hook punch - hook kick - guard and blocks (satisfactory) - movement with stance (good level) - show reasonable flexibility - show increased fitness - points sparring

Green belt: Ridge hand- inner crescent kick - axe kick - power kicks & punches - starting to use back leg - improved flexibility, speed & fitness - combo work - Demonstrate atack & defense in range - point and continuos light sparring.

Green belt - White Tag belt: Ridge hand- inner crescent kick - axe kick - power kicks & punches - starting to use back leg - improved flexibility, speed & fitness - combo work - Demonstrate atack & defense in range - point and continuos light sparring.

Blue belt: increased fitness, speed & movement - kicks (both legs) turning kick routine - side kick, back kick routine - jumping kicks - sweeps - good stance & blocks - combo work - points and continuos light sparring (few rounds each).

Blue - White Tag belt (junior Only): increased fitness, speed & movement - kicks (both legs) turning kick routine - side kick, back kick routine - jumping kicks - sweeps - good stance & blocks - combo work - points and continuos light sparring (few rounds each).
Purple belt: Teach a class - increased fitness, speed, power and movement - counter attacking using blocks bob & weave - all kick routines - sweeps with quick recovery to feet & attack - 30 press & situps no rest - light full contact sparring 2 x 2 minute rounds.
Purple - White Tag belt (Junior Only): Teach a class - increased fitness, speed, power and movement - counter attacking using blocks bob & weave - all kick routines - sweeps with quick recovery to feet & attack - fitness test & sparring as above

Brown belt: All kicks both legs - quicker sweep defence, recovery & attack - All routines - Spinning attacks - jumping kicks both legs - 60 turning kicks in 60 secs - 40 press ups & situps no rest - light full contact sparring 3 x 2 min rounds - teach a class + self defence.

Brown - White Tag belt: All kicks both legs - quicker sweep defence, recovery & attack - All routines - Spinning attacks - jumping kicks both legs - 60 turning kicks in 60 secs - teach a class + self defence - fitness and sparring as above brown belt.

Red belt: Demonstrate good/perfect technique - all routines - combo work - teach a class - point sparring - light continuous sparring - medium/full contact sparring 4 x 2 min rounds 50 press ups & situps no rest - self defence

Red - Black Tag belt: Demonstrate good/perfect technique - all routines - combo work - teach a class - point sparring - light continuous sparring - medium/full contact sparring 4 x 2 min rounds 50 press ups & situps no rest - self defence
Black belt: For black belt you are assessed before, during and after the grading.  This is to show the instructor that you are capable of maintaining good practice at all times.  The following list should be at an exceptional level and demonstrating excellent technique and fighting skills in the following:  Guard - Stance - Blocks - Punches - Kicks - Counter Strikes - Sweeps - Fitness - 60 press ups and sit ups no rest - Speed - Power - Using both legs - understanding and capability of all techniques and routines - Teach a class - Self defence - Sparring points - Full contact sparring 5 x 2 min rounds

If members wish to grade (some join us just for fitness) you will need to purchase the club suit and to wear your belt.  If it is your first grading then only the club suit is required.

For each grading we expect 100% effort at all times and to continue throughout the grading at maximum effort until the grading is complete i.e. when the instructor feels that you have met the criteria.

Basic Hands:

Basic Kicks:

  1. Knee
  2. Front Kick
  3. Outward Crescent Kick
  4. Turning Kick
  5. Side Kick

Kicking Routines

Turning Kick Routine (front leg only):

  1. Turning Kick
  2. Double Turning Kick
  3. Double Turning Kick, Jumping Turning Kick
  4. Four Turning Kicks
  5. 360 Turning Kick
(Perform 2 and 4 without putting your foot down).

Side Kick, Back Kick Routine:

  1. Side Kick
  2. Back Kick
  3. Side Kick, Back Kick
  4. Side Kick, Side Kick, Back Kick
  5. Side Kick, Back Kick, Side Kick Back Kick

Sweeping & Jumping Routines

Sweeping:

  1. Turning Kick Sweep
  2. Hook Kick Sweep or Reap Sweep
  3. Spinning Hook Kick Sweep or Spinning Reap Sweep

Jumping Kicks:

  1. Jumping Knee
  2. Jumping Front Kick
  3. Jumping Outward Crescent Kick
  4. Jumping Turning Kick
